This large and detailed study was drawn during the three days Turner spent in Lyon, in July 1802, in the course of his first visit to France and Switzerland. On his return he said that 'the buildings of Lyon are better than those of Edinburgh, but there is nothing so good as Edinburgh Castle'. The view is taken from the eastern bank of the River Sa?ne, looking towards the twelfth century Cathedral of St. Jean and the Fourvière Hill, the site of the original Roman settlement.
