The Veil series is named for the extremely thin overlapping "veils" of acrylic paint. Louis was enormously influenced by Helen Frankenthaler's soak stain technique, and felt she was "a bridge between Pollock and what was possible." This canvas is one of Louis' earliest experimentations with applying thin washes of pigment to the canvas, creating a large decorative ground that fuses paint and surface.
