姚期智
人物經(jīng)歷
1946年12月24日,姚期智出生于中國上海,祖籍湖北省孝感市孝昌縣。1967年,獲得臺灣大學物理學士學位,之后赴美留學,進入哈佛大學,師從格拉肖(Sheldon Lee Glashow,1979年諾貝爾物理學獎得主)。1972年,獲得美國哈佛大學物理博士學位。1973年,26歲的姚期智放棄物理學,轉而投向計算機技術,于是進入伊利諾大學攻讀博士學位。1975年,獲得美國伊利諾依大學計算機科學博士學位。9月,進入美國麻省理工學院數(shù)學系,擔任助理教授。1976年9月,進入斯坦福大學計算機系,擔任助理教授。1981年8月,進入加利福尼亞大學伯克利分校計算機系,擔任教授。1982年10月,擔任斯坦福大學計算機系教授。1986年7月,在普林斯頓大學計算機科學系擔任Wiliam and Edna Macaleer工程與應用科學教授。1998年,被選為美國科學院院士。2000年,被選為美國科學與藝術學院院士。2004年,當選為中國科學院外籍院士。同年,57歲的姚期智辭去了普林斯頓大學終身教職,賣掉了在美國的房子,正式加盟清華大學高等研究中心,擔任全職教授。2005年1月20日,姚期智出任香港中文大學博文講座教授,這是香港中文大學特設的大學講席。3月16日,獲得北京永久居留權的“綠卡”。5月9日,由微軟亞洲研究院與香港中文大學合作共建的“微軟-香港中文大學利群計算及界面科技聯(lián)合實驗室”在香港中文大學成立,姚期智擔任聯(lián)合實驗室國際顧問委員會主席。2007年,姚期智創(chuàng)建香港中文大學理論計算機科學與通訊科學研究所。3月29日,領導成立清華大學理論計算機科學研究中心。4月,理論計算機科學研究中心主辦第十屆國際公鑰密碼學會議,姚期智擔任大會主席,這是該會議首次在中國召開。2010年6月,清華大學-麻省理工學院-香港中文大學理論計算機科學研究中心正式成立,姚期智擔任主任。2011年1月,擔任清華大學交叉信息研究院院長。2017年2月,放棄外國國籍成為中國公民,正式轉為中國科學院院士,加入中國科學院信息技術科學部。11月,加盟中國人工智能企業(yè)曠視科技Face++,出任曠視學術委員會首席顧問,推動產(chǎn)學研的本質創(chuàng)新。12月,任清華大學金融科技研究院管委會主任。2021年5月24日,清華大學成立“量子信息班”,姚期智擔任首席教授。2021年6月,姚期智獲頒日本京都獎,以表揚他在計算和通信方面的先驅研究貢獻,相關發(fā)現(xiàn)對信息安全、大數(shù)據(jù)處理等技術的發(fā)展,奠下重要基礎。
研究方向
姚期智的研究方向包括計算理論及其在密碼學和量子計算中的應用。在三大方面具有突出貢獻:(1)創(chuàng)建理論計算機科學的重要次領域:通訊復雜性和偽隨機數(shù)生成計算理論;(2)奠定現(xiàn)代密碼學基礎,在基于復雜性的密碼學和安全形式化方法方面有根本性貢獻;(3)解決線路復雜性、計算幾何、數(shù)據(jù)結構及量子計算等領域的開放性問題并建立全新典范。1993年,姚期智最先提出量子通信復雜性,基本上完成了量子計算機的理論基礎。1995年,提出分布式量子計算模式,后來成為分布式量子算法和量子通訊協(xié)議安全性的基礎。因為對計算理論包括偽隨機數(shù)生成、密碼學與通信復雜度的突出貢獻,美國計算機協(xié)會(ACM)也把2000年度的圖靈獎授予他。

人才培養(yǎng)
2004年,姚期智全職回到中國,在他所從事的算法和復雜性領域,填補了國內計算機學科的空白,并帶來了一個從6人增至10人的講席教授組,他們都是國際上算法和復雜性領域出色的華人學者。隨著姚期智的歸來,清華計算機學科國際交流的頻率和層次都達到了一個新的高度。主導并與微軟亞洲研究院共同合作的“軟件科學實驗班”(后更名為“計算機科學實驗班”,也被稱為“姚班”)在清華成立,并先后招收大一、大二兩班學生。
2006年,清華計算機系有3篇論文入選理論計算機科學領域與STOC并列的最頂級學術會議FOCS,實現(xiàn)了國內學者在該會議上“零的突破”。當年24歲的博士生陳汐與來自香港城市大學的講席教授鄧小鐵合作解決了理論計算機科學的難題——二人博弈中納什均衡點的復雜性問題,并因此獲得2006年度FOCS最佳論文獎。這一年,姚期智的團隊還為國內計算機學者填補了在《美國科學院院刊》上發(fā)文的空白。
2008年,姚期智教授創(chuàng)建的香港中文大學理論計算機科學與通訊科學研究所展開為期五天的冬季課程,探討理論計算機科學的理論、應用及發(fā)展,共吸引了近80名中國內地、香港、臺灣及印度的頂尖學生參加。講者除了姚教授外,更有中大工程學院的多名資深教授。姚教授期望以中大作為基地,吸引世界各地更多知名的學者和優(yōu)秀的學生加入中大,令中大成為理論計算機科學研究的地區(qū)中心。

我發(fā)現(xiàn)做研究最好的方法是提出深刻、大膽和關鍵性的問題。如果你能提出好問題,那么就一定會做好研究,得出對學術界來說實用且有重大意義的結論。革命性、有望實現(xiàn)指數(shù)級增長的量子計算技術;可以用博弈論來解決經(jīng)濟問題的拍賣理論;人工智能,這項技術見證了AlphaGo等機器學習算法取得的令人難以置信的壯舉,但成功的原因仍然是個謎。

姚期智是研究網(wǎng)絡通訊復雜性理論的國際前驅,是圖靈獎創(chuàng)立以來首位獲獎的亞裔學者,也是迄今為止獲此殊榮的唯一華裔計算機科學家。姚期智以其敏銳的科學思維,不斷向新的學術領域發(fā)起沖擊,在數(shù)據(jù)組織、基于復雜性的偽隨機數(shù)生成理論、密碼學、通信復雜性乃至量子通信和計算等多個尖端科研領域,都做出了巨大而獨到的貢獻。他所發(fā)表的近百篇學術論文,幾乎覆蓋了計算復雜性的所有方面,并在獲圖靈獎之前,就已經(jīng)在不同的科研領域屢獲殊榮,是計算機理論方面國際上最拔尖的學者。(清華大學評)過去接近半世紀,姚教授創(chuàng)建了多個計算及通信模型,研究成果對計算機科學的不同領域,包括安全、隱私、平行運算、大數(shù)據(jù)處理,以至量子運算等尖端技術,帶來深遠影響。(香港中文大學評)
