《Tim Cook》 閱讀筆記

最近花了幾天時間讀了一本英文原版書，一方面是一直對Cook這個人以及蘋果公司比較感興趣，另一方面也想順便練習一下讀英文書的能力。前后用了一周左右的時間讀完，不知道是這本書的語言比較易讀還是自己的英文水平確實有進步，讀的過程中竟然非常輕松，雖然偶爾遇到幾個不認識的單詞，但完全沒有影響閱讀進度和興趣。所以我覺得想通過讀英文原版書來學(xué)習英語的話，對閱讀材料本身的興趣是很重要的。

這本書的副標題是：The Genius Who Took Apple to the Next Level，讀完后我也覺得Cook是個天才(genius)，甚至對他的仰慕超過了Jobs。Jobs是個產(chǎn)品設(shè)計天才，而Cook就是幕后的運營和管理專家。這本書對Cook的描寫大都取材于公開的材料。不像<喬布斯傳>的作者，因為是喬布斯指定的傳記作者，所以有很多"八卦"或者說個人生活細節(jié)方面的內(nèi)容。所以如果想通過本書獲得"內(nèi)幕"的要有點失望了，但是一本不錯的了解Cook的成長經(jīng)歷以及后喬布斯時期的Apple公司的書。

Cook出生和成長于美國南方，大學(xué)畢業(yè)于Auburn University(奧本大學(xué))，在IBM工作期間利用公司福利政策讀了Duke University(杜克大學(xué))的MBA(此處不得不感嘆這種福利太給力了)。1998年加入蘋果公司，書中說雇傭Cook是 “one of the best hires Jobs ever made". Jobs病重后兩次擔任臨時CEO，并在Jobs去世前幾個月被正式任命為CEO。庫克作為CEO的前幾年是飽受質(zhì)疑的，人們不相信沒了喬布斯的蘋果公司還可以繼續(xù)保持創(chuàng)新，但庫克用實力證明了自己。書中說"Cook's Apple is crushing the competition in almost every way"。

Cook治理下的蘋果公司更加包容，他們的6個核心價值觀(core values)是：

• Accessibility
• Education
• Environment
• Inclusion and diversity
• Privacy and security
• Supplier responsibility

其中的很多東西適合企業(yè)盈利沖突的，比如為殘疾人服務(wù)的Accessibility，庫克就承認這是一個虧本買賣，但他并不介意。書中說“Cook even acknowledged that making products accessible can be a money loser, but he doesn't care".

關(guān)于Environment，蘋果現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)實現(xiàn)了"100 percent renewable"，這在蘋果這種體量的公司中是很難做到的，并且更重要的是蘋果將這一目標擴展到供應(yīng)商中："they are the only company who have extended their 100 percent renewable commitment to also include their suppliers."

關(guān)于Inclusion and diversity，庫克認為diversity(多樣性)可以激發(fā)創(chuàng)新。所以蘋果在不斷提高團隊中少數(shù)族群(如黑種人，女性，殘疾人等)的比例。

關(guān)于Privacy and security，最著名的例子就是蘋果大戰(zhàn)FBI。他做好了將案件打到最高法院的準備，"He said he was prepared to take the fight all the way to the Supreme Court"，這件事情的最終結(jié)局是FBI通過一家以色列的公司解開了嫌疑人的手機，但庫克覺得有些遺憾，"Cook was personally disappointed that the case didn't come to trial. Even though Apple had 'won' and wouldn't be forced to create the backdoor, nothing had really been resolved". 這里可以看出Cook是為真理而戰(zhàn)，而非單純的商業(yè)利益。

關(guān)于Supplier responsibility，我覺得蘋果公司是很少的將很多我覺得是屬于供應(yīng)商本身的責任也攬起來的公司。比如2010年左右發(fā)生的多起富士康員工跳樓事件，很多美國媒體將矛頭指向了蘋果，說"When you look down at the Apple phone you are using in your hand and you swipe it with your finger is it possible that you can feel as if it is no longer a beautiful scren to show off, but the life and blood of us employees and victims?"。供應(yīng)商的問題到底歸不歸蘋果管，我覺得這件事見仁見智，但蘋果公司最終承擔起了更多的責任，幫助供應(yīng)商一起改善環(huán)境、員工福利等問題，我覺得還是比較佩服的。

書中關(guān)于Cook個人的事情描述的不多，因為他本人是非常注重隱私的一個人，他希望外界更加關(guān)注蘋果公司以及他們創(chuàng)造出的產(chǎn)品，而盡量少關(guān)注他個人的事情。但是他在2014年公開發(fā)表了一篇文章<Tim Cook Speaks Up^[1]>, "I don’t consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I’ve benefited from the sacrifice of others. So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy."。當時讀到這段話非常震撼，這里翻譯一下："我不覺得自己是一個活動家，但是我意識到自己在其他人的犧牲下得到很多好處。所以，如果你聽到Apple的CEO是一個同性戀會讓某個人接受自己，或者讓某些孤獨的人感到撫慰，或者鼓舞人們堅持他們的平等性，那么付出一些我個人的隱私也是值得的。"

作為喬布斯的繼任者，很多人會拿庫克和喬布斯作比較。Cook是最好的蘋果CEO嗎？書中認為其實在很早之前Cook已經(jīng)是作為蘋果CEO的角色在工作了，而Jobs更多是作為"chief product officer"。"Steve Jobs was never really a CEO,He was always the head of product." 但是作為蘋果這樣體量的跨國公司，產(chǎn)品設(shè)計已經(jīng)不是最重要的。"But what many may not realize is that what matters most at a mature company like Apple is not the products but rather the logistics - an efficient supply chain, distributions, finance, and marketing. And Cook has proven his talents for all of these." 所以我覺得作為CEO的角色，庫克肯定是合格的，甚至是超過Jobs的。
